Afghan Hound - facts

The Afghan Hound is a hound that is distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end.

There are at least 13 types known in Afghanistan; there may have been many more types of longhaired sighthound in the past.

The spectacular beauty of Afghan Hound dogs caused them to become highly desirable showdogs and pets, and they are recognised by all of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world.

The mustache is called "mandarins."

The breed has a reputation among some dog trainers of having a relatively slow "obedience intelligence"

The breed is selectively bred for its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan.

Lions spend much of their time resting, and are inactive for about 20 hours per day.They spend an average of two hours a day walking, and 50 minutes eating

Of all wild cat species, the lion is the most social cat, living in groups of related individuals with their offspring. Such a group is called a pride. 

The lion is a generalist hypercarnivore and usually hunts in groups. Its prey consists mainly of mammals.

Usually, the mother does not integrate herself and her cubs back into the pride until the cubs are six to eight weeks old.

Lionesses in a pride often synchronise their reproductive cycles and there is communal raising and suckling of the young (once the cubs are past the initial stage of isolation with their mother), who suckle indiscriminately from any or all of the nursing females in the pride. 

Lions have the loudest roar of any big cat.They most often roar at night; the sound, which can be heard from a distance of 8 kilometres.

 Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognisable feature of the species. Both sexes have hairy tufts at the end of their tails.

Results of phylogenetic studies published in 2006 and 2009 indicated that the jaguar and the lion belong to one sister group, which diverged about 2.06 million years ago.

The lion is the only member of the cat family that displays obvious sexual dimorphism. 

The mane starts growing when lions are about one year old. 

The white lion is a rare morph with a genetic condition called leucism

White lion individuals have been occasionally encountered only in and around Kruger National Park and the adjacent Timbavati Private Game Reserve in eastern South Africa.

Red panda facts -part1

The red panda is also called the lesser panda, the red bear-cat, and the red cat-bear

Red pandas are living in the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China.

It is arboreal, feeds mainly on bamboo, but also eats eggs, birds, and insects. 

It is a solitary animal, mainly active from dusk to dawn, and is largely sedentary during the day.

The red panda has been classified as endangered by the IUCN, because its wild population is estimated at less than 10,000 mature individuals and continues to decline although red pandas are protected by national laws in their range countries.

The red panda is the only living species of the genus Ailurus and the family Ailuridae. It has been previously placed in the raccoon and bear families.

Like the giant panda, it has a “false thumb”, which is an extension of the wrist bone. 

When descending a tree head-first, the red panda rotates its ankle to control its descent, one of the few climbing species to do so.

The red panda is territorial; it is solitary except during mating season.

Like the giant panda, they cannot digest cellulose, so they must consume a large volume of bamboo to survive.

If they feel threatened or sense danger, they may try to escape by climbing a rock column or tree. If they can no longer flee, they stand on their hind legs to make themselves appear larger and use the sharp claws on their front paws to defend themselves. A red panda, Futa, became a visitor attraction in Japan for his ability to stand upright for ten seconds at a time.

A few days before birth, females begin to collect material, such as brushwood, grass, and leaves, to build a nest.

The most often cited example of keeping red pandas as pets is the case of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. Pandas were presented to her family as a gift, and they were then housed in "a special tree house"
